Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to the questions we get asked most often. If something isn’t covered here, get in touch and we’ll come back to you.
Fitting and application
Do you provide fitting instructions?
Yes — fitting instructions are included with every order. If yours didn’t arrive or you’ve mislaid them, contact us and we’ll resend them. We also have a full fitting guide covering both wet and dry application methods.
Should I use the wet or dry method?
For smaller lettering and simple designs, the dry method is fine — clean the surface, position the graphic and press down firmly from the centre out. For larger graphics, panels or anything going on a curved surface, the wet method gives you more working time: mix a few drops of washing-up liquid into water in a spray bottle, mist the surface, apply the graphic and squeegee out the moisture. Allow 24–48 hours for the adhesive to fully cure before getting the surface wet.
What’s the best temperature to fit vinyl graphics?
Between 10°C and 25°C is the ideal range. Below 10°C the adhesive becomes sluggish and the vinyl loses flexibility, making it harder to work with and more likely to lift at the edges. Above 25°C the adhesive grabs too quickly, leaving little time to reposition. Don’t fit in direct sunlight — the surface temperature can be much higher than the air temperature and will cause problems even on a mild day.
How long should I wait after painting before fitting vinyl?
At least 30 days. Fresh paint needs time to fully cure and off-gas before vinyl is applied — applying too early can trap solvents and cause the paint to lift when the vinyl is eventually removed. If the paint has been force-dried or stoved, you may be able to reduce this, but 30 days is the safe minimum for air-dried finishes.
Will vinyl graphics damage my paintwork?
Vinyl will not damage a sound, well-adhered painted surface. However, if the paint is of poor quality, has been applied over filler, or is already starting to flake, there is a risk it may lift when the vinyl is removed. If you’re unsure about the condition of your paint, test a small inconspicuous area first.
The application tape has lifted after delivery — what should I do?
This occasionally happens in transit, particularly in cold weather. Unroll the graphic and leave it flat in a warm room for an hour or two, then lightly rub the tape back down with a card or squeegee. The adhesive will re-bond and the graphic will be fine to fit.
Can I wash my boat or vehicle after fitting vinyl graphics?
Wait at least 48–72 hours before washing, and hand-wash only for the first few days. Avoid pressure washers directed straight at the edges of the vinyl — sustained high-pressure water at close range can eventually lift the edges of any vinyl, regardless of quality. Light pressure washing at an angle, at normal maintenance distance, is generally fine once the graphic has cured fully.
Colours and design
Are the colours on the website an exact match?
Screen colours vary depending on monitor calibration and settings, so what you see on screen is a guide rather than a guaranteed match. If colour accuracy matters — for example, matching an existing graphic or a specific brand colour — request a physical sample before ordering.
Can I get a colour sample?
Yes. We can send a small sample of any vinyl colour on request. Contact us with the colour(s) you’re interested in and we’ll post them out to you. We also have a colour guide on the website showing the full range — bear in mind screen rendering will affect how these look on your device.
Can I request a font that isn’t in the designer?
Yes. If you have a specific font in mind, send us the name or a sample and we’ll confirm whether we can use it. Most commercially available fonts can be accommodated. If you have a logo or artwork with specific lettering, send the file and we’ll cut directly from that.
Can I send my own artwork or logo?
Yes — and for complex or bespoke designs, this is often the best approach. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG or outlined PDF) give the cleanest result. High-resolution PNGs or JPEGs at 300dpi or above at the intended print size also work. If you’re unsure about your file, send it over and we’ll let you know if it’s usable or needs any adjustment.
Custom orders and sizing
Can I order a size not listed on the site?
Yes, custom sizes are available for most products. There are some technical limits — minimum practical sizes for small lettering, maximum widths based on the vinyl roll width — but for the vast majority of requests a custom size is straightforward. Contact us with your requirements and we’ll confirm feasibility and quote.
Will one boat name be reversed for the other side?
No. Boat names are supplied reading left to right unless you specifically request a mirror image. For most lettering styles both sides read the same direction, which is the correct and most common approach. Some decorative effects — Wave-Top, Wave-Bottom and similar — are directional, so do mention if you need a mirrored version for the port side.
Do multi-colour or shadowed graphics come as separate layers?
No. All multi-colour and shadowed graphics are pre-layered and supplied as a single piece with application tape. You don’t need to align separate layers — everything is registered and ready to apply in one go.
Materials and longevity
How long will vinyl graphics last?
We use 7–10 year grade vinyl as standard. In practice, longevity depends on several factors: UV exposure is the main one, followed by installation quality and vinyl colour. Dark colours (black, dark red, dark blue) absorb more UV and tend to show fading sooner than lighter or metallic colours. A well-fitted graphic on a lightly used inland boat will comfortably outlast the rated lifespan; one on a south-facing transom in full sun will be at the shorter end.
What surfaces will vinyl stick to?
Vinyl adheres well to fibreglass (GRP), painted or varnished timber, steel, aluminium and most rigid plastics. Hypalon (used on some inflatable boats and RIBs) is not receptive to standard vinyl adhesive — if you need graphics on Hypalon, contact us as a different approach is needed. Textured, heavily oxidised or contaminated surfaces will also affect adhesion — thorough surface preparation makes a significant difference to how long any graphic lasts.
Ordering and delivery
How long does it take to receive my order?
Most orders are produced and dispatched within 2–5 working days. Once dispatched, Royal Mail Recorded Delivery typically takes 1–2 working days for UK addresses. Larger items sent by courier are usually next working day once dispatched. During busy periods (spring and early summer) lead times can extend slightly — if you have a specific deadline, let us know when you order.
How are orders shipped?
Smaller orders go via Royal Mail Recorded Delivery, which requires a signature. Larger orders go by courier. Rolled graphics are sent in protective tubes; flat items are sent in rigid-backed envelopes or flat-packed boxes. Tracking information is provided where available.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship to most countries worldwide. International orders are dispatched without VAT charged — VAT is removed at checkout for non-UK addresses. Import taxes and duties may be payable on delivery depending on your country; these are the responsibility of the recipient. Delivery times vary by destination, but most European orders arrive within 3–7 working days; further afield typically 7–14 working days.
Do you offer collection?
No — we are a mail-order business and don’t have a walk-in premises. All orders are dispatched by post or courier.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Contact us as soon as possible with a photo of the damage and the packaging. We’ll arrange a replacement promptly. We pack carefully to minimise transit damage, but if something does go wrong in the post we’ll sort it out without fuss.
